HOME

January often arrives bearing the weight of greater expectations. New goals. New habits. Articles everywhere instruct us on how we can strive for a new version of ourselves. Almost as if we are software in need of an upgrade.

At Reconnectology, we want to offer something different. Rather than setting goals or New Year’s resolutions, we are reconnecting to the relationship to ourselves - Home.

Home is not something we need to achieve. It is something we remember.

Throughout this month, we will be exploring how we listen inwards, curious about how we inhabit our bodies, and grow in understanding towards the patterns that shape us.

Curiosity allows us to notice without needing to fix or judge (or be aware of our judging). To meet ourselves as we are, rather than who we think, or society thinks we should be. To learn to listen.

We will use the lens of the koshas, the layers of our being, as a gentle framework for this.

Coming Home through the layers of self

Annamaya Kosha – The physical body

We begin with what is most accessible: the body. Through movement, we hone the sense of proprioception and become more aware of how we move, how we sit, how we rest. To notice sensation. The areas of strength, stability and effort. The areas asking for softness, ease, and support.

Rather than “pushing” the body to change, we get curious:

  • Where do I feel grounded?

  • Where do I hold tension?

  • What does my body need today to feel at home?

This is not about performance or progress. It is about relationship.

Pranamaya Kosha – the breath

From the body, we move to the breath, which creates the subtle bridge between body and mind.

  • Where do you notice your breath most easily?

  • The chest, the ribs, the belly, the nostrils?

As we tune in with curiosity, we may begin to notice how our breath responds to our emotions, our environment, guided by our nervous system. When we gently stay with this awareness, the breath becomes a steady point of connection. Something we can return to, again and again.

Manomaya Kosha – thoughts and emotions

As we slow down, patterns often become clearer. Certain thoughts repeat. Certain emotional responses show up again and again. This month is an invitation to notice these patterns with compassion:

  • When did I learn this way of responding?

  • Where does this pattern protect me from?

  • How has it helped me cope or adapt?

Curiosity here creates space. Space to soften self-criticism and to understand ourselves more deeply.

Vijnanamaya Kosha – inner wisdom

With reflection comes discernment. This layer draws on many sources of wisdom: our lived experience, therapy, yoga, neuroscience, nature, and relationships. As we tune in, we begin to sense what feels true for us, rather than what we think we “should” do.

We might ask:

  • What matters to me right now?

  • What supports me to feel well, to feel some ease?

  • What feels aligned as I move into this year?

Anandamaya Kosha – The essence of who we are

At the deepest layer is not something to improve, but something to remember.

A sense of ease beneath effort.

A quiet presence beneath doing.

A feeling of connection to ourselves and to life.

Home.

Creating a Home practice

January can be a beautiful time to rediscover and set up a home practice, not as another task or resolution, but as a place to return to.

You might explore:

  • A set place in your home

  • A scent that signals calm or alertness

  • Music, silence, or gentle sound

  • Lighting that feels warm and supportive

These cues help the nervous system recognise: this is a place to arrive. As Rolf Gates reminds us:

 “Yoga is not a work-out, it is a work-in.”

What do you need to look after your Home?

As we move through this month of tuning in, we invite you to reflect gently:

  • What helps you feel grounded and supported?

  • What nourishes your body, breath and mind?

  • What does coming home to yourself look like right now?

This month is about supporting this remembering. Not striving to become someone new, but reconnecting with who you already are.
