Movement and the hidden senses

When someone asks us how many senses we have, most of us confidently answer, "Five."
Sight. Hearing. Smell. Taste. Touch.
They're the senses we naturally think of when we hear the word sensory. Yet our experience of the world is shaped by many more streams of information than these alone. Every moment, our nervous system is taking in an extraordinary amount of sensory information that helps us understand not only the world around us, but ourselves within it.
Two of these lesser-known senses are proprioception and the vestibular system. Although they don't often make it into everyday conversation, they are quietly working alongside all our other senses, helping us move, orient ourselves and build an ongoing relationship with the world around us.

We're fascinated by these sensory systems because they remind us of something important: our bodies are never separate from the spaces we inhabit. We are constantly interacting with our environment.
Think about walking through a woodland path. Your eyes notice the trees, your ears hear birdsong, perhaps you catch the smell of damp earth after rain. But something else is happening too. As you step over uneven ground, turn to look up into the canopy or duck beneath a low branch, your brain is gathering information through movement itself.
Movement isn't simply something your body does after your brain has made a decision.
Movement is one of the ways your brain learns. Every shift in weight, every reach, every turn of your head adds another piece to the picture your nervous system is building about where you are and how you relate to the world around you.
Proprioception is sometimes described as our sense of body position, it is the constant conversation between your muscles, joints, connective tissues and brain. Without needing to look, you know whether your arms are folded, your knees are bent or your feet are planted firmly on the floor. This isn't because you've consciously worked it out; it's because your body is continuously sending information about itself.

Rather than being fixed, this internal map is always changing and updating. The richer the movement experiences we have, the richer the information available to the brain. Moving in different directions, reaching beyond familiar patterns, exploring different surfaces or changing positions all provide fresh sensory information. It's one of the reasons variety can feel so enlivening, not because our muscles need constant challenge, but because our nervous system is continually learning.
Alongside this sits the vestibular system, nestled within the inner ear. Many people know it as the balance system, but balance is only part of its story. The vestibular system is constantly detecting movement, whether we're turning, accelerating, slowing down or changing direction. It works in close partnership with our eyes, allowing us to keep the world visually stable even while we're moving through it.
Pause for a moment and slowly turn your head from side to side while keeping your eyes on something in front of you. It feels effortless, but it's an extraordinary conversation between your eyes, your inner ears and your brain. Together they help you stay oriented, helping you understand where your body is in relation to everything around you.
This relationship between vision and movement is one reason we often include gentle eye movements, head movements and changes in position within our sessions. They aren't simply exercises; they're opportunities for the nervous system to gather fresh information about the environment and about ourselves within it.
Perhaps this is where movement takes on a different meaning.
From a sensory perspective, movement is information. Every movement gives our nervous system fresh data about our body, our surroundings and how the two relate to one another.
In modern life, many of us spend hours sitting in the same position, looking at a screen just a few feet away. While our bodies become well adapted to these familiar patterns, they miss the richness that comes from exploring different directions, distances and environments.
This is why stepping outside, walking over uneven ground, looking towards the horizon, climbing stairs or simply reaching overhead can feel so refreshing. These everyday movements don't just wake up our muscles, they enrich the ongoing conversation between our body, brain and environment.
Our sensory systems help us orient, adapt and respond to the world around us, reminding us that we are not separate from our environment but always interacting with it.
Movement, then, isn't simply something we do to improve our bodies. It's one of the ways we stay connected, to ourselves and to our surroundings.
